What is Pour Over Coffee

Originating in the United States, Pour Over Coffee is a twist on traditional American filtered coffee and has become a speciality in various cities of North America such as Portland. Manual preparation is preferred to preserve its authentic flavour.

Also known as Hand drip coffee, Pour Over Coffee stands out because freshly-ground coffee is inserted in a filter cone with a paper filter, which is then placed in a cup with a hole.

After levelling the coffee, pour boiling water over it a little at a time. All you have to do now is wait until the coffee drips through the filter into the cup of the person who will drink it. This procedure is repeated a number of times, depending on the size of the filter. Making Pour Over Coffee takes longer than a traditional espresso, so it’s ideal for those who have some free time to dedicate to a beverage that stands out from the rest.

Although it is possible to buy automatic machines specifically designed for Pour Over Coffee, today there are still many who love to prepare it manually. This method is great because it enables you to select the ideal quantity and the brewing time. Instead, with an automatic machine you don’t have full control over different variables. Also consider that for some coffee beans, both the standard temperature and the time set for extraction don’t enable you to obtain the desired drink, being automatic.

How to make the best Pour Over Coffee

To prepare Pour Over Coffee you need to use 60g of coffee for each litre of water, or a tbsp of coffee beans for each cup of water. This means 15g of coffee and 250ml of water per person. Keep in mind that the whole process takes around 2 minutes. Before you begin, make sure you have a high-quality coffee grinder that will ensure excellent grinding.
The recommended grind size is medium to fine.

First rinse the filter and position it inside the cone. Add the ground coffee, level it with a teaspoon and make a small hole in the centre. Now pour enough water to soak all the coffee, then wait for about thirty seconds. Continue to pour the water very slowly, starting in the centre of the filter and moving outwards in a circular motion. Stop once you have reached the desired quantity. The temperature of the water should be about 200°C or 400°F. Once the liquid drips through the filter – to be rinsed before use – into the cup, your coffee is ready.

This coffee has become so popular that companies in the industry started to produce special filters. You can also buy filters in stainless steel that have the advantage of being reusable.
